Hardin Countyis named for Col. Joseph Hardin who blazed a trail through southwest Tennessee's thick woodlands in the early 1800's to map 2,000 acres of rich land on the east side of the Tennessee River. The county is perhaps best known as the site of the pivotal Civil War battle of Shiloh. Through the years, the citizens of Hardin County have steadfastly preserved the unique American history of the area for all to enjoy. Nationally recognized Pickwick Lake museums, historic districts and a host of annual festivals reflect the spirit of the region. World class recreational facilities and sport fishing on Pickwick Lake and the Tennessee River culminate our offering of leisure time activities. SALTILLO
Saltillo Historic District & Ferry Main St., Saltillo, 901-925-2364 (Hardin County Tourism). Enjoy a ride on one of Tennessee's remaining river ferries to the charming town of Saltillo, an early river town with homes dating from the 1840's. Styles of architecture range from Greek Revival and Italianate influences to country farmhouses. Two cemeteries and a church pre-date the Civil War. The Saltillo Ferry is open Mon-Sat. 7 a.m. - 4 p.m. Fee Charged for ferry crossing. |

SAVANNAH
C herry Mansion 101 Main St., 901-925-2364 (Hardin County Tourism). Circa 1830, Built by David Robinson and presented as a wedding gift to his daughter & son-in-law, W.H. Cherry Served as headquarters for General U.S. Grant in the spring of 1862. Grant's breakfast was interrupted by couriers with news that the battle of Shiloh had begun. Building is not open to the public, but visitors welcome to walk the grounds & take pictures. Grant Headquarters Monument is located one block east. |

SAVANNAH HISTORIC DISTRICT AND HISTORIC TRAIL.
Hardin County Tourism, 507, Main St. 1-800-552-FUNN. The Savannah Historic District is composed of 16 homes showcasing some of the finest examples of Southern architecture and provides a pleasant two mile drive or stroll through yesterday. The homes date from 1830 - 1930. The historic trail offers views of the Tennessee River and interpretive wayside exhibits. Points of interest include Cherry Mansion, headquarters for General Grant prior to the Battle of Shiloh; the ferry crossing site operated by Alex Haley Sr. and his wife, Queen; and interpretation of the "Trail of Tears" Cherokee removal of 1838 and the Civil War. The Welsh-Nesbitt house, operating as the White Elephant Bed and Breakfast, is open for tours by appointment. Brochures of the historic district and trail are available at the Tennessee River Museum. |

TENNESSEE RIVER MUSEUM

Paleontology, archaeology, steamboats & Civil War are among the exhibits. The Shiloh Effigy Pipe, uncovered in 1898 at Shiloh National Military Park, is also featured. From Muscle Shoals to Paducah, from dinosaurs to the T.V.A., history in the lower Tennessee River Valley is both unique and fascinating! Its story awaits your discovery at Hardin County's "Tennessee River Museum." Here, exhibits chronicle prehistoric times, life of the Mississippian mound builders, the tragic story of the "Trail of Tears, " the Civil War on the River, The Golden Age of Steamboats, and the Tennessee River Today. SHILOH
Shiloh National Military Park Highway 22, South of Crump, 901-689-5696. Sunday morning, April 26, 1862: 100,000 Civil War troops clash in the fields and woods near Pittsburg Landing in the first major battle in the war's western theater. Two days later, U.S. Grant blunts the Confederate attack, pushing Southerners back to their base at Corinth, Miss. Today, America's best preserved battlefield features 151 monuments, 217 cannon and over 450 historic tablets. Visitor Center with orientation film an museum open daily 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. (park grounds open until dark). Admission charged.
